Driving and Cardboard Boxes

As odd as it may be, I always enjoyed my job as FedEx. Don’t get me wrong, I pissed and moaned when things got rough, but I always had fun. At the time I attributed it to the fact the job was mindless which was a pleasant change from what I normally did. Once you got into the swing of things it just kind of flowed. Even now when I’m sitting in a cubicle writing code I think fondly of those nights sorting package.

I was driving back from Denver tonight when I realized I had made it halfway home in complete silence. No radio, no MP3s and no cell phone. Then it hit me, I like driving for the same reason that I enjoyed sorting for FedEx. What I realized is neither of them are mindless per say. Both require massive amounts of attention, but once learned can be done as second nature. It wasn’t that I loved sorting because I didn’t have to think, but because I could think about it without trying. Once that kicked in it was almost calming and in a way kind of beautiful.

I’ve done a road trip for a new job, for school, to move a rocking chair across the country for a pregnant sister, to see a new baby, to drink with good friends on St. Patties, and once just because we were curious where a road went. All good reasons mind you and I wouldn’t change a one of them, but maybe for me a road trip is something more. A chance to relax, step back and see things as they really are. We all get so caught up in work and personal drama we forget to just relax and enjoy where the road takes us.
